Play Therapy

Is your older child struggling with feelings of jealousy or being left out since the baby arrived?

It’s completely normal for older siblings to have mixed emotions when a new baby joins the family. They might feel jealous, confused, or even act out in ways they didn’t before. As a parent, it can be tough to know how to help them work through these big feelings. That’s where play therapy can make a real difference. It’s a gentle and fun way to support your child as they adjust to the changes in your family.

Have you recently moved to a new country? Does your older child feel unsettled, anxious, or have trouble adjusting to a new environment?

Relocating to a new place, especially a new country, can be overwhelming for kids. They may feel anxious, miss their old friends, or have trouble adjusting to a new routine. Play therapy is a wonderful way to help your child express these feelings, understand their emotions, and feel more confident in their new surroundings.

Does your child have frequent tantrums or outbursts that leave you feeling exhausted and frustrated?
Tantrums are a natural way for young children to express their frustration or overwhelm, but they can be draining for both parents and kids. Play therapy helps children communicate their emotions in a healthier, more manageable way, teaching them to cope with frustration and anger while providing a safe space for them to work through their feelings.
What Is Play Therapy for 3+ Year-Olds?
Play therapy is a special, gentle approach where children use toys, games, and creative activities to express their thoughts and feelings. It’s an effective way for children, especially those 3 and older, to process emotions they may not fully understand or know how to express. For kids going through changes—like a new sibling or moving to a new home—play therapy gives them the space to work through their feelings in a way that feels natural to them.
Play is the Language of the Child
Children often don’t have the words to express everything they’re feeling, so they communicate through play. Instead of talking about their problems or frustrations, they act them out. You might notice your child having tantrums, clinging to you more than usual, or even playing out scenarios with toys that reflect their worries. This is how children work through their emotions—by playing out their inner world. Play therapy allows them to safely explore these feelings and make sense of their experiences, giving them the tools to express themselves more clearly over time.
How Play Therapy can help with common emotional issues:
  • Jealousy and Sibling Rivalry: If your older child is feeling left out or jealous of the new baby, play therapy can help them express those feelings and learn healthy ways to bond with their sibling.
  • Settling into a New Home or Country: Moving can be tough. Play therapy helps children process their feelings about their new surroundings, helping them adjust and feel more secure and happy in their new home.
  • Regression and Behavior Changes: It’s normal for children to revert to behaviors they may have outgrown—like wanting a pacifier or acting younger than their age—during big changes. Play therapy gives your child a safe place to explore these feelings and helps them regain a sense of control and comfort.
  • Anger, Frustration, and Tantrums: Does your child struggle with frequent tantrums or outbursts of anger? Play therapy helps kids recognize what’s making them upset and teaches them positive coping strategies through play. It also helps children better communicate their feelings without resorting to tantrums, reducing frustration for both them and you.
  • Building Confidence and Self-Esteem: If your child is feeling unsure of themselves or lacking confidence, play therapy can help them find their voice, build their self-esteem, and feel more secure in who they are
  • Making Friends and Social Skills: For children who struggle with social interactions, play therapy provides a safe space to practice sharing, taking turns, and interacting with others, helping them feel more comfortable and confident in social settings.
  • Grief and Loss: Whether it’s the loss of a loved one, a pet, or even a major life change, play therapy helps children process their grief and emotions in a healthy, manageable way. It’s an opportunity for them to express their sadness and begin to heal.

Why Play Therapy Works So Well:
Play is how children naturally express themselves, so play therapy taps into that to help them work through big emotions. Instead of just talking about feelings, they can act them out through toys, games, and art. This makes it easier for them to communicate what they’re going through without feeling pressured to put everything into words.
If your child is feeling overwhelmed by new changes, struggling with big emotions like tantrums, or just needs help navigating their feelings, play therapy can be a wonderful support. It’s a kind, playful way for them to process emotions, build confidence, and find healthier ways to cope with whatever they’re going through. It’s not just about the child, it can help your family grow stronger and more connected through these big transitions.
